Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Just been diagnosed with a bulged slipped disc between lumber 4 and lumber 5 in my lower back.

How long does it take to sort itself out?

Which painkillers? Codene?

Physio?

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Tricky one this.......I had a prolapsed disc that ruptured.

Initial treatment should be bed rest, with the intention being that the bulge go away of its own accord. I'd imagine you have sciatic pain and after diagnosis a Doctor will prescribe the most suitable pain killers.

Take the bed rest seriously. Next steps might be to reduce the bulge artificially, or remove the disc and fuse the vertebrae. Then there's a whole raft of operations after that, dependent on which is appropriate.

They are now saying bed rest is the wrong thing and has been the wrong advise for years, the complete opposite is true and you need to keep moving.

Also my disc is just bulged and not ruptured, still a fucker with the pain though

I sympathise with you. I had a prolapsed disc seven years ago, my disc had basically compressed and was pressing on my sciatic nerve. It was pretty serious to be honest. Had to have a back operation which sorted the problem out. Was needed though. The pain prior was at times excruciating.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
I did in 2001. L4/L5 Disc prolapsed so much it pressed on the nerves and left me unable to feel my legs.

Had a laminectomy and dischectomy (sp) and then spent three weeks in hospital trying to get my legs to move. Disc didn;t need to be fully removed as it was so big, so the doc just cut some off (I kept the bit they removed in a jar for a couple of years)

Luckily they did and I then spent three months in intensive physio building my muscles up so I could walk again.

Happily there was no permanent damage other than a bit of numbness on the back of my thigh which I hardly notice now.

I did have to give up virtually all sport though as I was advised that it could easily happen again due to the size of my discs.

No, no one ever did

Freind has a de-hydrated disc (not the same I know) but they have told her there is no easy cure.

She has had cortisone injections but they only last a few months. They say they can fuse the two discs but are very reluctant to go down that road until the situation becomes totally unliveable.

Yup got mine about 15 years ago... finished me playing football cricket etc... had physio to begin with as I lost over 50% of my posture... once straightened up not too bad... got a load of scarring around the disc but only seem to suffer from sciatica since... don't do pain killers unless I really have to... done Tylex when it first went but that is dangerous stuff

I wondered why it didn't work......I ended up with an epidural (abut as unpleasant as you can get) then a spinal decompression.

After that lot I was fit for any and all sport, but it took 18 months to solve the problem.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
As you can tell from the responses, there are varying degrees of prolapse. L4-L5 is certainly the most common. I did workers' compensation law (not sure what you call it over there) for a while. 90% of those cases were L4-L5 issues so I saw many folks trying to rehab it. If you can avoid surgery, do so at all costs. A disc fusion will temporarily offer relief but you are adding more weight for your other discs to carry which makes it more likely to happen to another one. Sadly there is no cure for this, there is only management which involves strengthening the core muscles to alleviate the load the disc carries and avoiding movements/activities that might aggravate it.

I have heard there is a new treatment in the works involving stem cell injections which has showed promise, but I don't know much about it.

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
I was L5/S1....don't think it matters which, still painful. I also have the muscle atrophy to attest to my issues.

I was desperate to avoid a fusion, if only due to the loss of flexibility. I swear by chiropractors and when I started with my current one (he's a sports injuries specialist) he X-Rayed my back.

Lovely.......continuous sport including professional cricket between the ages of 8 and 45 have left me with discs that marry with that of an 80 year old. I'm 57.

Ho hum......

Re: Anyone ever had a slipped (prolapsed) disc in their lower back
Can't remember which ones i had but i had two prolapsed discs.
I'm used to pain having two rare spine diseases, I've never had a day without it but 6 years ago when i had this the pain was something else.
Had really bad sciatica for months, i lost count of the amount of therapy i had, operations are too dangerous so that was off the table!

In the end i had to try learn to walk again, it used to take me 15 minutes to crawl to the toilet on my elbows and knees.

The best way to try and counteract any back pain is drink lots of water to keep hydrated and keep moving!

Good luck.

Terrywait 5:26 - You have my fullest sympathies mate.
If i ever get a twang of the nerve i just go into panic mode thinking i'll be back there again.
You're right about the standing up/sitting down etc each one didn't last long and when i did find some kind of weird position where the pain eased it was bliss.

Oh found out supposedly mine was caused by road running (with shin splints) when younger... that and probably a shit batting stance...
